In Flight

Powered Parachutes-What you really need to know!

Hello, and thank you for taking a few minutes of your valuable time to learn how to substantially add to your enthusiasm for the joy of flight.

In 1999, I decided that it would be very exciting to build and fly my own powered parachute (PPC) aircraft. I have a love for building, flying as well as a lot of enthusiasm, so I jumped in wholeheartedly.

First I got on-line and searched out local PPC training and found a really nice guy by the name of Terry Howell. After consulting with him over the phone, I made an appointment for an intro flight.

He recommended that we wait for a calm morning, because he wanted my first PPC experience to be an extremely positive one.

And boy was it ever! I absolutely loved every minute of it!

I arrived at his private airstrip at sunrise dressed to fly. He had suggested over the phone that I should dress warm and bring some rubber bands to help seal up my pants at the ankle.

Terry did a thorough preflight on his beautiful machine as I watched. Then we pushed her out to the takeoff position and did a warm up on the engine.

I assisted Terry with the Chiron chute lay out which is a high performance elliptical wing. We then got situated on board the factory aircraft; it was cozy as my stomach was Terry's back rest.

He then instructed me on my responsibilities as a passenger such as: Keep your feet on the pegs during takeoff and landing, be sure the camera is secured because anything that falls will most likely go through the prop, and be sure to un-plug the communications cable before getting out.

I was pretty darn excited at this point. I love to fly and this was something completely different for me. I had flown slow and fast fixed-wing aircraft before and turbine powered helicopters in the Army.

I reached overhead and behind to give the pull starter a good yank, the engine fires up. Terry broadcasts a short message on the pilot's frequency stating our location and that we are now taking off.

We throttled up and, before I knew it, we were flying! I could hardly believe the climb rate! After our first turn, we must have been at around five hundred feet and my car was a small speck below us.

We quickly gained another couple thousand feet of altitude and crossed some hilly terrain before reaching the valley. At about two thousand feet above ground level (AGL), Terry announced that we were going to lose some altitude.

Then we did a spiraling decent into the valley. It was like a spin in a fixed wing aircraft, except with added gravity (G) forces because we were at the end of a pendulum. I can tell you that I was grinning from ear to ear! This was like riding on an aerobatic "Magic Carpet".

The air was so smooth that morning that it was like sitting in my easy chair at home, but with an indescribably awesome view of the world!

We cruised around at low level, waving at the spectators on the ground, who were obviously in awe.

A really cool thing about a PPC is that you can safely fly very low, five or ten feet AGL. They fly at twenty eight to thirty-five miles per hour or so, depending on the airframe weight and chute utilized.

After what seemed like about thirty minutes (an hour and a half later) we did a few fly bys and landed back at Terry's place.

I was "high" all day long after that, and I knew that I would fly my own PPC soon.

I hope my story got you excited enough to schedule your own PPC flight so you can get involved in this fabulous sport!
