A warning about Rotax and Hirth aircraft engines!
Hello and thank you for taking a few minutes of your valuable time to learn how to take some painless steps to substantially minimize the amount of money you will have to invest in your aircraft engine.
I have been an A&P technician since 1990, run my own aviation business since 1997 and been involved with aircraft maintenance, design, manufacturing and flying since 1978.
After spending countless hours consulting and providing products for aviation enthusiasts, I know what you guys need and the questions you need answers to.
In 1999 I decided that it would be very exciting to build and fly my own aircraft. I have a love for building, flying and a lot of enthusiasm, so I jumped in wholeheartedly.
Well, deciding what to build, and then building it was great fun, that is until the problems started. The majority of my experience had been in certified turbine and 4-stroke piston engines (Lycoming and Continental), not in the small experimental engines I would need for my small ship.
At that point in time, the designer of my particular plans built machine recommended a company for great used engines. I took his recommendation and purchased an overhauled engine.
I paid a very substantial amount for what was presented as a freshly overhauled Rotax 582 and being basically a trusting individual I thought all was as it should be. After all I was an A&P, and that's the way things are done, they are done right, or so I thought.
Now I am ashamed to say that I did not look under the engine case, or even take the engine down for inspection until three months later, just when I was installing the unit for service on my ship.
That is when I found a weld across the bottom of the case, which could only mean one thing, previous crankshaft failure. A call to the company I bought it from got me nothing but a major amount of flak, and no answers.
Like any person in my shoes, I decided to see if this thing would run, and it did. The ground runs proceeded well after some finagling of the prop and working on the carburetors.
I flew the machine a short time later and what a thrill! I highly recommend building and flying your own aircraft!
The bad news is that the engine failed on me after about five running hours. Good thing I was still circling the flying field and not over the nearby trees and other obstacles.
The engine suddenly started losing power and jockeying the throttle did very little to improve the running. Man, was that scary for a low time pilot!
Well the good news is that I put her down easy. I was really disappointed that my "fresh engine" had failed so soon.
I noticed some oil had started seeping from the aft crankshaft seal and realized that the person who previously "overhauled" it was too cheap to replace the now $62.00 "genuine Rotax" crankshaft seals while it was apart for the crank repair. At that time they were only about $40.00.
After the hassle of the engine out, the cost of parts and my labor to overhaul the engine, I was wishing I had just bought new instead. Later, I did buy a new 3203 for about the same price I had invested in the 582.
This is a personal experience I wanted to share because I often hear of similar incidents. It made me so mad that I decided to do something about it. Instead of just staying pissed, I become a Rotax and Hirth engine expert and now six years later, it's a substantial and very successful part of my business.
Most people don't realize that nine out of ten used aircraft engines are not as advertised, especially the non-certified ones. A few sellers don't know what they have, others know darn well and are simply trying to get as much money as possible and the heck with the buyers' welfare and safety.
I want you guys to get what you deserve and that's a reliable and economic aircraft engine. Whether it's new or an overhauled unit, you owe it to yourself to get the benefit of years of practical experience in this industry before diving in.
